Map of the Tongue According to Chinese Medicine

Updated: Apr 30, 2022

In Chinese medicine, the tongue represents a map of the human body. It is a mirror of your inner health, and is one of the key tools in an acupuncturist’s/herbalist’s diagnostic toolkit. 👅

Different areas of the tongue correspond to different organs.

Looking at the tongue enables the Chinese medicine practitioner to assess the health of the organs and the status of the Qi, Blood and Body Fluids.

The tongue body colour indicates the state of the Yin organs, the Blood and Yang Qi.

The shape and size of the tongue can reflect one’s constitution or the health of the Blood, Body Fluids and Yang Qi.

The tongue coating corresponds to the state of the Yang Organs, in particular the Stomach, and it indicates Dampness.

Together, the size, shape and colour of the tongue enable the practitioner to differentiate between deficiency and excess, interior and exterior, hot or cold and yin or Yang disease.

Look at your tongue and tell me what you see!!! 😋
